"Come hungry! West Falls restaurants are just steps from the action, making it easy to grab your favorite food and drinks to-go and bring them over to the watch party." That line comes from the developer's listing for this Saturday's college football watch party at Commons Park. It also describes how the whole district works one year in. The restaurants serve the lawn. They are counter-service spots with to-go bags you carry to a picnic table in front of a big LED screen.
West Falls held its ribbon-cutting on the Commons on Thursday, September 25, 2025. Twelve months later, the 18,000-square-foot green has a weekly schedule. The grocery store meant to anchor everyday trips still has no opening date. In practice, West Falls is somewhere you go on a Friday evening or a Saturday afternoon, and that is the best way to use it this fall.
The Park Was Finished First
The Commons was designed as the district's shared living room. Coverage of the September 2025 completion described seating, flexible gathering areas and a fire pit, with free community events planned year-round. The developer opened it with a Grand Opening & Fall Festival on Sunday, September 28, 2025, with live music, games, arts activities and pop-up food and drinks.
What has changed since is how regular the programming has become. A one-off festival brought people in once. A Friday music series, four Saturday watch parties and two movie nights, all in one October, give people reasons to come back. The Falls Church Independent's September 17 bulletin lists the fall lineup at Commons Park: live music, movie nights, football watch parties and fitness classes, all free and open to the public.
The restaurants arrived one at a time, and each one added a reason to stay on the lawn longer.
A Year of Openings Around the Lawn
| Business | What it serves | When it opened |
|---|---|---|
| Mason's Famous Lobster Rolls | New England seafood, fast-casual | Around March 19, 2025 |
| SeoulSpice Korean Kitchen | Korean rice and noodle bowls | Grand opening June 4, 2025 |
| Honoo Ramen Bar | Ramen, sushi and entrées | Soft-opening by late June 2025 |
| Ice Cream Jubilee | Ice cream | Open by late September 2025 |
| BurgerFi | Burgers, at 168 W. Falls Station Blvd. | Listed with daily hours by November 2025 |
| Best Buns Bakery & Burgers | Bakery, breakfast, sandwiches, full bar | October 1, 2026 |
Most of that list is quick food that travels well. A lobster roll, a Korean bowl or a scoop from Ice Cream Jubilee all fit in a to-go bag and on a picnic table. The non-food tenants follow a similar pattern. CityDance, Levine Music and Perspire Sauna Studio were all open by April 2025, and so was Casabella Salon by that June. A dance class or music lesson brings a family to the district at a set time each week, and the Commons is right there for the wait.
Best Buns Adds a Morning and a Rooftop
The newest arrival changes the hours of the place. Best Buns opened on Thursday, October 1, at 265 W. Falls Station Blvd., in its own standalone building. It is open from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily. The ground floor is a grab-and-go counter selling pastries, coffee and specialty sandwiches. Upstairs is the chain's first outdoor rooftop seating with cocktails, wine and draft beer.
This is the fourth Best Buns. The original opened at 4010 Campbell Avenue in Shirlington in 1995, and the other two are in Springfield and Tysons. Company spokesperson Erica Herrera told ARLnow that the pastries and all of the bread are made from scratch. She recommended the breakfast sandwiches, the turkey club, and the cupcakes with cream cheese frosting. Fried chicken sandwiches come on bread or buttermilk biscuits. The cocktail list includes margaritas, mojitos, espresso martinis and a limoncello spritz.
The opening also has a local tie. Jon Norton, CEO of Great American Restaurants, said he looks forward to being neighbors with Meridian High School, next to the project, where his own high school basketball coach, Jim Smith, now coaches. Best Buns first announced the Falls Church location in November 2025, so the move from announcement to opening took about ten months.
Before October 1, the Commons calendar was built around evenings and game days. With a 7 a.m. coffee counter on the same block, the district now covers mornings too.
What October Holds on the Commons
All events are at Commons Park, 201 W. Falls Station Blvd., and are free.
Friday live music, 6 to 9 p.m.
- October 9: Josh Walker
- October 16: James Stevens
- October 23: Matt Davis
- October 30: James Stevens
College football watch parties on Saturdays. These run October 3, 10, 17 and 24. Games play on a large LED screen all day, with picnic tables, a bar, and specials from West Falls businesses. Today's party runs from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.: Michigan at Minnesota at noon, Virginia at Florida State at 3:30 p.m., and Washington at USC at 7:30 p.m. A pop-up bar serves beer, seltzers, canned cocktails and non-alcoholic drinks, with mix-and-match bucket specials. Virginia fans get the afternoon slot.
Movie nights with free popcorn.
- October 8: Practical Magic
- October 22: Hocus Pocus
The two published start times for the movies don't match. The September 17 bulletin lists 7 p.m. The developer's later event page for Practical Magic says 7:30 p.m. Check the West Falls events page that afternoon before you set out with a blanket.
Put together, this is a busy month. Something is free on the lawn on at least eleven separate days in October, and every one of them works best with takeout from a building a few steps away.
The Errand That Still Means Leaving
The open storefronts fill an evening. The ones still marked "coming soon" are the ones that would bring people in on an ordinary Tuesday.
The Fresh Market is planned as the grocery anchor. It would take about 29,000 square feet at 101 Haycock Road, on the ground floor of a future residential building at West Falls. When the chain announced the store in July 2024, it said its new Northern Virginia stores were expected to open within three years. A trade report at the time put the target at mid-2026. In May 2026, a Fresh Market spokesperson told FFXnow there was no updated timeline for the Falls Church store. That same month, the chain closed its Vienna store on Branch Road after nearly 15 years. The Alexandria store is staying open, and FFXnow reported no sign that the Falls Church plans had changed. Because the store's home is described as a building still to come, the useful milestone to watch is construction starting at 101 Haycock Road. An announcement of an opening date would follow that.
Dok Khao Thai Eatery is next on the list. Its West Falls opening was first projected for August 2025. By September 2025, ARLnow reported that it was under construction at 180 W. Falls Station Blvd. with a projected 2026 opening. As of August 2026, the restaurant's own locations page still listed the West Falls branch as "Coming Soon."
Withered Fig, an online menswear retailer, chose West Falls for its first physical store. In August 2025, Northern Virginia Magazine reported an early-2026 target. The developer's April 2026 directory still listed it as coming soon, along with IMAGE Studios and La'Baik. That directory runs behind events. As of this week it still shows Best Buns as coming soon. Local news has been the faster way to find out what has actually opened.
Getting There Without Circling
ARLnow describes parking at West Falls as limited. Best Buns validates 90 minutes of free parking for its guests. The developer's directions page lists two garages: Garage B at 7174 Cardinal Lane, and Garage A/D at 370 Mustang Alley. On a watch-party Saturday that runs from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., you will be there for more than 90 minutes. Ask whichever business you buy from about its own validation policy, or plan on paying for the garage. The district also sits by the West Falls Church Metro station, so leaving the car at home is an option.
When The Fresh Market's building breaks ground, more of these blocks will start filling up, and buyers and sellers nearby will want to know what that means for them.
